martinez who was injured in the bombings. aaron hern is recovering, and donations are helping his family get back on track financially. abc7 news reporter kira klapper joins us live from martinez. kira, a fun run is going to be happening later this morning? >> that's right, a fun run fundraiseler start about an hour and a half from now at alhambra high school in martinez. a family friend who put together the event said 500 people already rsvps for it. they are hoping more people will come. anyone who comes can run or walk alone or with a team. it's ten dollars a person to enter, five dollars for teens and you get a deal if you bringing a big group. all the money will go to helping the hern family with their unexpected and expensive medical expenses their son was near the finish line waiting for his mom to cross when the second bomb hit and sending shrapnel into his legs. he has taken his first steps. he is undergoing treatment for the severe wounds he had. but that is a testament to their strength as a hole. >> so strong, so driven. katheryn qualified from boston from her first marathon

in martinez with the progress the boy is making and the exciting gift he got last night. good afternoon. >> reporter: three days after getting home from boston the harns met with reporters here outside city hall. they did not bring their son aron because he is home resting. but kathryn and allen harn brought good news about their seasons condition and recounted their experiences during the bombings. two days ago we took video of him at home recovering from injuries he suffered on april 15th, that day, his 12th birthday he doctor removed staples because he has healed so well. now parents are expressing gratitude but say he still has a long way to go. >> fortunately they had enough skin to put it back together again and it has gotten better every day so right now it is a matter of trying to regain the strength he has lot and the mobility from the injury. >> he wants to go to a movie with his friends. he wants to -- he wants to hang out with his friends, he wants to get back to his sports. he wants to make sure he finishes school. he is worried about his grades. i mean, yeah, he is ready t

, the jury has begun their deliberation, eight men and four women. juan martinez began his closing arguments developing that jodie was a manipulator, lie yar and stalker, always played the victim and every, ever admitted it was her fault. he gab to establish what he says are the elements of premeditation for murder that she staged a burglary of her grandfather's home stealing his .25 caliber handgun, she needed gas cans so she would never have been able to found out to go to travis' home in arizona, she dyed her hair brown. the defense focused in on the crime scene itself, it was a chaotic crime scene because it was a chaotic relationship and jodi was intelligent. she left a paper trail, she made bank deposits, she rented the rental car with a debit card, went to walmart using her debit card and her gas purchases were with a debit card. they went back to self-defense saying maybe jodi did believe her life was in eminent danger and once she fired that shot maybe she snapped, maybe she went too far because that crime scene shows anger and rage and passion. the rebuttal close by juan martinez f

recovery. nbc bay area kristi smith joining us live in martinez where aaron hern's mom and dad just wrapped up a news conference. kristi, it's been nothing tort-of- short of a nonstop adventure for this young man. how is he doing? >> under the circumstances he's doing well, home and recovering. we heard from his parents and we know this is going to take a long time. there are physical scars and emotional ones as well, considering what aaron saw after the blast. what they are trying to do is take this one step at a time as they recover from these horrific events they went through. katherine and alan hern thanked local restaurants, businesses, sports teams that supported the family throughout this. they say aaron is improving after suffering a large shrapnel wound to the leg. after the blast katherine got separated from aaron and his dad. she calls it the longest two hours of his life. aaron visited the site before he left boston. he was watching his mom run. he came home after two surgeries just in time for his 12th birthday. he received visits from two oakland a's players and even first lad

an opportunity to meet with raymond martinez and we actually have inundated him with a lot of questions. this office has been around for a few years now and we were interested in what kind of data was being kept and georgia put together our staff questions and raymond worked diligently and came with some interesting data. this year there were more than 2 hundred and 70 concerns registered with the office and were interested in the concerns and some of the trend we learned about is the majority of family are elementary parent and there's concerns from high school but the highest numbers of complaints are bullying and most residents are referred to the office of family voice or referred by the education placement center. the majority of families are latinos or african-american there's very few chinese using the services. why is it that there's a low percent of chinese families we don't know if there are barriers such a language. it seems unliken there are less concerns but we think it's something worth looking at. and possibly having another chinese staff member in that office. another qu
